Industrial Blowers

What Are Industrial Blowers?

An industrial blower is a piece of compressed air equipment used to supply a significant flow of gas or air to a range of different industrial applications and processes, including ventilation, conveyance, cooling, air handling, dust loading, fume extraction, vacuum lifting and material handling, amongst others. They achieve this by effectively enhancing air flow using an impeller, electric motors and airfoils. Industrial blowers are designed to produce higher pressure than a fan but lower pressure than an air compressor, placing them somewhere in the middle of these two technologies. Whilst they are supplying a flow of gas or air, their main priority is to increase the flow whilst also removing any contaminants present, such as particulates, dust, and dirt.

How Do Industrial Blowers Work?

There are different types of industrial blower technologies, so the exact working principle may vary, but generally, a blower will use a rotating impeller or rotor to create a vacuum. This is the case for side channel blowers, which is the type we specialise in at MidTech. Side channel blowers are able to produce a consistent and continuous input and output of air that is either pressurised or under vacuum. This is made possible by an impeller inside of the industrial blower spinning, which creates a difference in pressure between the input and output of air, but how does this actually happen?

  1. Air or gas enters through the inlet before entering the side channel, where the centrifugal force in the rotating impeller blades accelerates the gas outwards, causing the pressure to increase.
  2. With each rotation, kinetic energy is added, which results in a further increase of pressure along the side channel.
  3. The side channel narrows at the rotor, thus sweeping the gas off of the impeller blades and discharging it.
